The Salty Sisters Welcome You
We are The Salty Sisters Women’s Sailing Club, the largest club within-a-club of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC). Our parent Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States, located on beautiful Tampa Bay. The Salty Sisters are also historic, being one of the oldest women’s sailing clubs in the U.S. Our Club was founded in 1951 by a group of women who were wives of SPYC members. Today our membership is over 100. We sail from the nearby St Petersburg Sailing Center (SPSC), which is managed by the SPYC, using their fleet, which includes Ideals, 420s, Sonars, Optimist Prams, and J70s. We meet regularly each Wednesday for sailing followed by a luncheon and business meeting. However, our activities are not restricted to Wednesdays, Salty Sisters participate in many other sailing-related and social events throughout each month. The purpose of our organization is to promote sailing and to assist our members in becoming proficient in the science of sailing.
We invite you to explore our site to learn more about our organization, our membership, and our activities both locally and as a member club of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA).
The St Petersburg Yacht Club
Founded in 1909, the St Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC) is rich in history and tradition. The Club is located on the beautiful waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. SPYC is known for the excellence of its standards of race management and regattas are run almost all year round. Members have been the recipients of numerous national and international awards, many of which are on display at the Club. Salty Sisters members are very active in the organization and facilitation of Yacht Club functions. Multiple Salty Sisters have served on the SPYC Board. The Salty Sisters Captain has a permanent position on the Executive Committee. A Salty Sister, Pat Seidenspinner, was the first woman SPYC Commodore. SPYC is not only a gathering place for avid boaters, but it is also one of Tampa Bay’s most prestigious social venues.
The St Petersburg Sailing Center
The Salty Sisters sail from the St Petersburg Sailing Center (SPSC), not only for their regular weekly sailing program but also when hosting competitive events with other FWSA clubs. The SPSC is one of the most active sailing facilities in the U.S. The Salty Sisters Captain serves as our representative on the Sailing Center Committee. The Center is located a short distance south of SPYC on Demens’s Landing. The fleet includes Optimist Prams, Ideal 18s, Sonars, 420s, and J70s. SPSC is host to numerous regional and national sailing regattas during the year. Examples are the NOOD, Thistle and Midwinter Lightning. The Center provides Adult Sailing Classes from beginner on up. Youth Sailing Classes and summer camps are in demand. The training provided by the Sailing Center has been the springboard for many of today’s nationally and also some internationally competitive sailors.
